Keeping Your Furniture Safe & Secure on the Move

When planning a move, thinking about how you’ll fit all of your furniture and items into a trailer can be daunting. The task even feels like you’re playing tetris once it comes down to packing it full. No matter the case, there are steps to ensuring your property arrives to your new location safe and intact, and you can even do it in an organized and easy-to-get-to manner to boot.

So, don’t stress about your move (you’ve already got enough to stress about). Take these few tips into account and you’ll feel like a moving pro.

Put heavy items in the front.
Washers, dryers, dressers, and other very heavy items (especially those that can seem taller than other furniture and appliances) are good candidates to place in the front of your trailer. Note that the “front” is the part of the trailer closest to your vehicle. This helps to balance the weight distribution of the trailer itself when on the road. Also, by putting these bigger, heavier items in the front, you can better plan where everything else that’s smaller and lighter weight will go in the back part of the trailer.

Use moving straps.

Strap down any loose furniture or appliances that can slide. Whether you have things in the bed of your truck, in an open trailer, or a closed trailer, be sure to fasten items that could slide around. Not only could they potentially damage other items because of their weight—the items themselves could be damaged in the process.

Use any spare cheap moving boxes as separators.
If you don’t happen to have any furniture blankets (also called moving blankets) or have used up what you do have, think about using some cheap moving boxes that aren’t in use as furniture separators. If they’re big enough once torn down, they can stand up between pieces of furniture that may snag on other furniture cloth.

Don’t stack too many things.
The more things you stack in order to save room for other items, the more likely those items are to fall over and be damaged. While it’s alright to stack items that aren’t likely to be damaged, make sure that they’re tight and together so that the risk of them falling is minimized.

Again, take these tips with you the next time you move and you’ll be stress free about your move. Safety and the security of your items is most important!
